About Us

YULA Drama School is widely acknowledged as one of the top schools and casting agencies in the region, having unprecedented results in both LAMDA examinations. Many students have gained entry into prestigious drama schools (RADA, LAMDA, Guildhall, Bristol etc.) and others have obtained degrees in drama and other related theatre arts.

Pupils are entered for the LAMDA examination board, which is fully accredited, offering an opportunity to gain UCAS points. Pupils are trained from entry to diploma level.

Guest teachers from the acting profession visit on occasion, to come and lead the groups in masterclasses and discpline-specifc workshops.

Our pupils are allowed total freedom of expression resulting not only in practical achievement but also the all-important confidence and character building.

Who We Are

The school is run by Sherril Parsons (LLAM Hons), highly-respected drama tutor of 40 years' experience. Sherril trained as a professional actress and has had success in TV, theatre and radio. Her insight into the workings of the profession is invaluable and evident in the unique teaching techniques she uses.

Our fabulous acting and musical theatre teacher is the wonderful Judith Poole. Judith has trained extensively all over the world, qualifying as a performing arts teacher, and was formerly Head of Drama at the Belvedere Academy. Having now left to pursue freelance opportunities, Judith also works as Director of Drama at Liverpool College.
We have been fortunate to have Judith work at YULA for the past 13 years; having volunteered to cover one Saturday and has fortunately never left!

Kathleen is an actor and drama tutor from Liverpool. Having spent her childhood in YULA herself, it’s wonderful to be back teaching the new generation of talent. Kathleen trained on the BA Acting course at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, gaining formal and practical acting training which inspires her teaching here. Since graduating she has gone on to work in theatre including both the Everyman and Royal Court Theatres in Liverpool.

Isaac is a working class, queer theatre-maker, working across acting, directing, writing, access support, drama facilitation and children’s storytelling under his alter ego ‘Og the Giant’. After experiencing deafness as a child, he developed a deep interest in physical storytelling, combining text with movement. He has trained in physical theatre, clowning and street theatre with Egg People Theatre and Hope Street Ltd, and frequently works with disabled artists and communities to create inclusive, accessible work.

His recent acting credits include Winter Wonderland (That Theatre Group, 2024), Peter and Graeme (First Take, 2024), Potato Milk (Turning Worm, 2024), Macbeth (Rubbish Shakespeare, 2023), Christmas Countdown (Paperwork Theatre, 2023), Curtains, Curtains, Curtains… (Capstone Theatre, 2023), Memoria (Tmesis, 2022), and Climate Change is Rubbish! (Egg People Theatre, 2021).

Isaac graduated from Liverpool John Moores University in 2018, winning the Yasmin Jones Award for Creativity. He later trained on the Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse Director course (2022), directing Shook by Samuel Bailey, and has since worked extensively with Finger Food Theatre and the Everyman & Playhouse, directing and assistant directing new writing and mentoring emerging directors. He has also collaborated with RAWD (Random Acts of Wildness Disability) Theatre on productions such as ‘Phone Home’ and ‘The Little Mersey Mermaid’.

Isaac’s writing includes ‘Beep Beep’, a tender and imaginative one-man show that follows a young boy navigating the loss of his father, retreating into a magical world of his own creation to make sense of his grief. Developed in collaboration with Roots Touring Theatre Company, the piece blends poignancy with wonder.

With years of experience working alongside amazing young people, Isaac brings energy, warmth, and a love of storytelling to his teaching. Through his work with LAMDA, he delights in sparking creativity and helping students discover their own voice and confidence on stage.

Our History

Prior to the formation of YULA, some 25 years ago, Sherril taught at three of the city's top full-time performing arts colleges. YULA was first established in a small attic studio with only four pupils, all of whom gained places at leading drama schools. YULA is now based in the fabulous Mossley Vale Theatre, on the campus of Liverpool College in the south of the city. The excellent facilities at our disposal allow every student the experience of performing in a real studio theatre, under the lights.

Ex YULA pupils can regularly be seen in films, on stage and prime time TV.
